Hedgehog Care Guide: Everything You Need to Know About Your Prickly Companion

Hedgehog Care Guide: Everything You Need to Know About Your Prickly Companion

Hedgehogs are one of the most unique and fascinating exotic pets available — their adorable faces, curious personalities, and distinctive quill-covered backs make them truly one-of-a-kind companions. African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) are the most common pet species and can live 4–7 years with proper care. Here's your complete guide!

⚠️ Is a Hedgehog Right for You?

  • Hedgehogs are nocturnal — they are most active at night and may not be ideal for those wanting a daytime companion
  • They are solitary animals — keep only one per enclosure
  • Hedgehogs can be illegal in some US states (California, Georgia, Hawaii, Pennsylvania) — check local laws before purchasing
  • They require regular handling from a young age to become tame

🏠 Enclosure Setup

  • Minimum size: 4 square feet of floor space — bigger is always better
  • Best options: C&C cages, large plastic storage bins, or hedgehog-specific enclosures
  • No wire floors: Wire floors injure hedgehog feet — use solid-bottom enclosures only
  • Temperature: 72–80°F — critical! Below 65°F triggers torpor (dangerous false hibernation); above 85°F causes heat stroke
  • Heating: Ceramic heat emitter or radiant heat panel with thermostat — never use heat rocks
  • Bedding: Fleece liners (easiest to clean) or paper-based bedding — avoid cedar and pine (toxic)
  • Wheel: 12" solid-surface wheel (Carolina Storm Wheel or Wodent Wheel) — wire wheels cause foot and leg injuries
  • Hideout: Enclosed hide for sleeping during the day

🍽️ Feeding

Hedgehogs are insectivores that require a high-protein, low-fat diet:

  • Staple: High-quality hedgehog kibble or cat food (30%+ protein, under 15% fat) — look for chicken as first ingredient
  • Insects: Mealworms, crickets, and dubia roaches as treats (2–3 times per week)
  • Fruits & vegetables: Small amounts of apple, blueberry, cooked chicken, and cooked egg
  • Avoid: Grapes, raisins, avocado, citrus, onions, and dairy
  • Feed at night when they are naturally active
  • Fresh water available at all times — water bottle or heavy ceramic bowl

🐛 Quilling

Young hedgehogs go through "quilling" — a process where baby quills are replaced by adult quills, typically at 6–8 weeks and again at 4–6 months. During quilling, hedgehogs may be extra grumpy and reluctant to be handled. This is completely normal — be patient and handle gently.

🤝 Handling & Socialization

Hedgehogs are naturally defensive and will ball up when frightened. Daily handling from a young age is essential for taming. Start with short 10–15 minute sessions, letting the hedgehog explore on your lap. Use a fleece blanket for comfort. Well-socialized hedgehogs will uncurl and explore freely when held.

💊 Health & Common Issues

Common hedgehog health issues include Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS — a progressive neurological disease), obesity (from lack of exercise and overfeeding), dental disease, and skin mites. Annual vet check-ups with an exotic animal veterinarian are essential. Watch for weight loss, difficulty walking, or excessive scratching.
