Pet Care Tips

Pet Care Tips

At Companion for Life, we believe every pet deserves the best care possible. Here are our top tips to keep your furry, feathered, and finned friends happy and healthy.

🐶 Dogs

  • Exercise Daily: Most dogs need at least 30–60 minutes of physical activity per day to stay healthy and mentally stimulated.
  • Balanced Diet: Feed age-appropriate, high-quality food. Avoid table scraps and foods toxic to dogs (e.g., chocolate, grapes, onions).
  • Regular Vet Visits: Schedule annual check-ups and keep vaccinations up to date.
  • Dental Hygiene: Brush your dog's teeth regularly or use dental chews to prevent gum disease.

🐱 Cats

  • Enrichment: Provide scratching posts, climbing trees, and interactive toys to keep cats mentally engaged.
  • Litter Box Hygiene: Clean the litter box daily and replace litter regularly to prevent stress and health issues.
  • Hydration: Cats often prefer running water — consider a pet fountain to encourage drinking.
  • Indoor Safety: Keep toxic plants (e.g., lilies, poinsettia) out of reach.

🐦 Birds

  • Social Interaction: Birds are social creatures — spend time talking and playing with them daily.
  • Fresh Food Daily: Offer fresh fruits, vegetables, and species-appropriate pellets. Remove uneaten food promptly.
  • Clean Environment: Clean cages and perches regularly to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Safe Space: Keep birds away from kitchen fumes, drafts, and other household pets.

🐟 Fish

  • Water Quality: Test water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrite) regularly and perform partial water changes weekly.
  • Proper Feeding: Feed small amounts once or twice daily — overfeeding is a common cause of poor water quality.
  • Tank Size: Ensure your tank is appropriately sized for the species you keep.
  • Compatibility: Research fish compatibility before adding new species to your tank.

🐹 Small Pets (Rabbits, Hamsters, Guinea Pigs)

  • Safe Housing: Provide spacious, well-ventilated enclosures with appropriate bedding.
  • Fresh Hay & Greens: Hay should make up the majority of rabbits' and guinea pigs' diets.
  • Gentle Handling: Handle small pets calmly and regularly to build trust and reduce stress.
  • Chew Toys: Provide safe chew toys to support dental health and prevent boredom.
