Gecko Care Guide: How to Keep Your Gecko Happy & Healthy
Partager
Geckos are one of the most popular reptile pets in the world — and for good reason! They're fascinating, low-maintenance, and full of personality. Whether you're caring for a leopard gecko, crested gecko, or another species, this guide covers everything you need to know.
🦎 Choosing the Right Enclosure
The size and type of enclosure depends on your gecko species:
- Leopard Geckos: A 20-gallon tank is ideal for one adult. They are ground-dwellers, so floor space matters more than height.
- Crested Geckos: Prefer tall, vertical enclosures with plenty of climbing branches and foliage.
Always ensure the enclosure has secure ventilation and a tight-fitting lid.
🌡️ Temperature & Lighting
Leopard geckos need a warm side (88–92°F) and a cool side (75–80°F). Use an under-tank heater or a low-wattage basking bulb. Crested geckos thrive at room temperature (72–78°F) and do not require UVB, though it can be beneficial.
🍽️ Feeding Your Gecko
- Leopard Geckos: Insectivores — feed crickets, mealworms, and dubia roaches. Dust with calcium powder at every feeding.
- Crested Geckos: Omnivores — enjoy commercial crested gecko diet (CGD) plus occasional live insects.
Always provide fresh water in a shallow dish and remove uneaten insects promptly.
🏠 Hides & Enrichment
Geckos need at least two hides — one on the warm side and one on the cool side. Add a moist hide during shedding season to help with skin removal. Branches, cork bark, and artificial plants make great enrichment.
💊 Health & Supplements
Dust feeder insects with calcium (with D3 for indoor geckos) at every feeding, and use a multivitamin supplement once or twice a week. Watch for signs of metabolic bone disease, stuck shed, or parasites.
